For platforms and studios

Cam category SEO

Category pages are where most non-brand searches land on a webcam site, and where most platforms waste their crawl. Cam category SEO decides which categories deserve an indexable page, keeps those pages useful even when nobody in them is live, and stops tag combinations from burying them.

One rule for each kind of category

Platforms often have hundreds of tags and thousands of combinations. Decisions made per type, not per page, are the ones a development team can actually apply and keep applying as new tags appear.

Category typeIndexed?How we handle it
Core categoriesYesThe handful of categories people search for by name. Each gets a written introduction and stable links from the homepage.
Niche tagsSomeIndexed only where there is search demand and enough performers most of the day. The rest stay useful for browsing without being in search.
Tag combinationsNoTwo or three tags together multiply into thousands of URLs. They stay available to members and out of the index.
"Online now" and sort ordersNoThey change by the minute and show the same performers as the base category. No crawlable links, canonical to the base page.
Language and regionCase by caseWorth a page when the platform really serves that audience, with the language set correctly on the page.

The crawl side of this, including how filter URLs are blocked or canonicalized, is covered in technical cam SEO.

Four tests before a category is indexed

A category that fails any of these can stay on the site for members. It just should not ask Google to rank it, because a weak page in the index costs more than it earns.

  1. Test 1

    Demand

People search for the category by name, in numbers worth a page.

  2. Test 2

    Supply

It shows enough performers across the whole day, including outside peak hours.

  3. Test 3

    Something to say

There is more to write than the category name repeated in a sentence.

  4. Test 4

    Stability

It will still exist in six months, so links and rankings have time to build.

Pages that are empty half the day

Cam categories have a problem other sites do not: their content depends on who is online. A category that is full at 10 p.m. in New York can be nearly empty at 10 a.m. If Google happens to crawl it then, it sees a page with no performers and a normal "OK" status, which is the pattern Google calls a soft 404.

Design for the quiet hours instead. When few performers are live, the page should show who usually streams in that category and when, the next scheduled shows, and links to closely related categories. That keeps the page useful to a visitor at any hour, and it gives search engines a stable page to evaluate.

The same thinking applies to model pages when someone goes offline, which our research on inactive model pages covers.

Copy that is not a template

The quickest way to spoil category pages is a paragraph where only the category name changes. Google's spam policies describe mass-produced pages made mainly to rank, whether written by people or by software, as scaled content abuse. Pages like that rarely rank, and a large set of them can weigh on the whole site.

Good category copy is short and specific: what kind of shows the category covers, when it is busiest, what sets it apart from its neighbors. Three honest sentences beat three hundred generated words. Our research on category page SEO has examples of both.

Category SEO questions

Send us your category list with your enquiry and we will say which ones we would index first.

How many category pages should be indexed?

Usually far fewer than a platform has. A category earns an indexable page when people search for it, it has enough performers most of the day, and there is something specific to say about it. Everything else can stay useful for members without being in search.

What should a category page show when nobody in it is live?

Never an empty grid. Show performers who are offline with their usual schedule, the next scheduled shows, or closely related categories. An empty page returning a normal status is exactly what Google treats as a soft 404.

Can category descriptions be generated automatically?

The layout can be, the words should not be. Templated text with only the category name swapped is what Google describes as scaled content, and it rarely ranks. A few honest sentences per category do more.

Are there categories you will not work on?

Yes. We do not optimize or build any category that suggests minors or non-consent, whatever the platform calls it. Those are lines for the law, for payment providers and for us.

Send us your platform. We will show you what Google is not seeing.
